Daily Dutch

Er* was vandaag soep. Zo lekker met dit koude weer. We hebben ervan** genoten. (There was soup today. So good with this cold weather. We enjoyed it.) The position of "er" in a sentence is not always intuitive. * "Er" is used as a preliminary subject. In that case you start the sentence with "er". * * "Ervan" is used to refer (to the soup). In that case you put it directly after the predicate "hebben".

Prettige avond! Insgelijks! Hetzelfde! (Good evening! Likewise! The same!)

We hebben vandaag soep gegeten . Morgen eten we geen soep. We eten morgen een toetje. (We ate soup today. We will not eat soup tomorrow. We have a dessert tomorrow.)

Nederlanders eten twee kilo drop per persoon per jaar. Zelfs Engelse drop wordt het meest in Nederland gegeten. Charlie Chaplin eet in de film The Goldrush zijn schoenveters op. Maar dat waren dropveters . (The Dutch eat two kilograms of licorice per person per year. Even English licorice is most commonly eaten in the Netherlands. Charlie Chaplin eats his shoelaces in the movie The Goldrush. But those were laces made of licorice.)

Morgen komt er weer een echte daily Dutch message, dat beloof ik. (Tomorrow there will be another real daily Dutch message, I promise.)

In de nacht van 27 op 28 oktober gaat de klok een uur achteruit naar wintertijd. Dan kunnen we een uur extra slapen! (Tomorrow night the clock goes back one hour to winter time. Then we can sleep an hour extra!)

Traditional Dutch first names are used in expressions. Een nieuwsgierig Aagje . (A nosy parker.) (Aagje is a girl´s name.) Jan en alleman. (Every Tom, Dick and Harry.) Joost mag het weten.  (Goodness knows.) Klaar is Kees ! (All done!)
