Er* was vandaag soep. Zo lekker met dit koude weer. We hebben ervan** genoten.

(There was soup today. So good with this cold weather. We enjoyed it.)

The position of "er" in a sentence is not always intuitive.
* "Er" is used as a preliminary subject. In that case you start the sentence with "er".
** "Ervan" is used to refer (to the soup). In that case you put it directly after the predicate "hebben".
